Twisted, trailing foliage that looks like nothing else in your plant collection.
The Hoya Rope, botanically known as Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’, is instantly recognizable for its thick, curled leaves that twist tightly around trailing vines. Also called the Hindu Rope Plant, this unusual Hoya adds incredible texture and movement to shelves, hanging planters, and plant displays.
Its waxy, sculptural foliage gives it an almost braided appearance, becoming even more impressive as the vines grow longer and fuller.
And despite its unusual look, the Hoya Rope is relatively easygoing. Give it plenty of bright indirect light, let the soil dry between waterings, and this slow-growing beauty can stick around for years — potentially rewarding you with clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers along the way.

Styling Tip
This plant was made to trail.
Place your Hindu Rope Plant in a hanging planter, on a high shelf, or on top of a cabinet where its twisted vines can cascade freely. Its unusual leaf shape provides so much texture that it doesn’t need a busy planter — simple ceramic, terracotta, or neutral finishes let the foliage take center stage.
For a collected indoor-jungle look, pair it with plants that have smoother or broader leaves. The contrast makes the Hoya Rope’s curled foliage stand out even more.
Good to Know
Hoya Rope has thick leaves that store water, so overwatering is much more likely to cause problems than letting it dry a little too long.
Allow the majority of the soil to dry before watering again, and use a chunky, well-draining potting mix to help keep the roots healthy.
Its tightly curled foliage can also collect dust more easily than flatter-leaved houseplants. An occasional gentle rinse or careful cleaning will help keep the plant looking its best.
Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ is naturally slow-growing, so don’t worry if it isn’t putting out feet of new growth overnight. Bright indirect light, warmth, and patience go a long way.
And if your Hoya begins flowering, leave the small flower spurs in place once the blooms fade — the plant can produce flowers from those same spots again.
If you’re searching for a unique pet-friendly trailing houseplant, the Hoya Rope brings sculptural texture, easygoing care, and unmistakable personality to your indoor plant collection.
